In 1934, Cadet Sam Manekshaw was one of the first  gentleman cadets to be trained at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun. His companions also include his younger rival Tikka Khan. After graduating from the military academy this year, he will be posted as a  lieutenant in the 12th Frontier Army Regiment in Ferozepur. Shortly after his inauguration, he met Shilu Bode, with whom he later married. In 1942, during  World War II, Manekshaw was promoted to  acting major and sent with his regiment to  the Burma front. During the Battle of Sittane Bridge, he was wounded  but survived and was awarded the Military Cross for his bravery.

In 1947, during the partition of the British Indian Army, Major Manekshaw was asked by his colleague Major Yahya Khan to join the Pakistan Army. He chose the Indian Army instead. After independence, disagreements arose between the two countries over the sovereignty of Kashmir. In October 1947, Pakistan launched a military campaign to conquer the region. In response, Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and Home Minister Vallabhbhai Patel dispatched Mr. Manekshaw and Mr. V. Jawa. P. Menon to Kashmir. They succeeded in securing Kashmir's accession  to India. India also counterattacks, but the war ends in a stalemate.

In 1959, Manekshaw, now a major general and commander of the Defense Staff College in Wellington, was approached by Defense Minister V.K. Krishna Menon and Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Brij Mohan Kaur shared their views on  Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General K.S. Thimayya. Manekshaw interprets her actions as political interference and rejects her. However, Kaul intends to block Manekshaw's impending promotion by ordering a court martial for her alleged misconduct. Nevertheless, Manekshaw is acquitted by her superiors. In 1962, the Sino-Indian war broke out and the army was annihilated by the Chinese. Kaul resigns and Nehru dismisses Menon. On Indira Gandhi's advice, Nehru promoted Manekshaw to the rank of lieutenant general and appointed him commander of the IV Corps at Tezpur. He suggests moving forward, but Nehru, upset by defeat, refuses. Indira takes Manekshaw's side. By 1963, Manekshaw had successfully reorganized his forces in the Northeast Frontier Department. After Nehru's death in 1964,

Manekshaw was promoted to commander of the Eastern Army. Two years later, Indira is appointed Prime Minister. From 1965 to 1967, Manekshaw participated in counterinsurgency operations against the Mizo National Front, for which he was awarded the Padma Bhushan. In 1969, as dissension grew among East Pakistan's Bengalis, Yahya, now a general, was appointed president of Pakistan. Elsewhere, Manekshaw has been appointed as the  next COAS of the Indian Army and will also be promoted to the rank of general. In 1970, the Awami League, based in East Pakistan, won the Pakistani parliamentary elections. However, Yahya refused to hand over power to them, leading to anti-government demonstrations across Pakistan. In response, Yahya allows Tikka, now a lieutenant general, to begin Operation Searchlight. This is a massive anti-Bengal project that he carries out with ruthless efficiency. Considering the situation, Indira is in favor of war, but Manekshaw is against it, pointing out the obstacles in the army. She agrees to wait. America warns Indira about war, but she refuses. Troops are mobilized and Mukti Vahini training begins.

On  December 3, 1971, Pakistan launched a pre-emptive attack on Indian territory. India immediately counterattacked with counterattacks in Pakistan's western and eastern districts. Fierce clashes ensued between the two armies, with Pakistan suffering heavy casualties on both land, sea and air fronts. On December 16, the Pakistani army, which had been overwhelmed in the east, surrendered to the Eastern Army, and the war ended. With this conclusion, Indira achieves a political victory, but Yahya accepts the humiliation of defeat. As Manekshaw's retirement neared, Indira promoted him to field marshal in recognition of his wartime leadership. He proudly retired in January 1973.
